Warning Signs of Clogged Sewer Drains

Did you know that the main sewer line for your home affects all of the other plumbing systems on your property? As a result, if your sewer line is clogged, it could pose some pretty serious (and messy) problems for your drain pipes, your home, and your property. There’s a reason why your sewer pipes are so deep in the ground- you want that sewer water to stay as far away from you as possible. With a clog, it may start to flow back up and into your home. No thanks! Here are some warning signs to keep an eye out for that might signify a clog in your sewer drain.

Water Backup

One of the first things you may see if your sewer drain is clogged is water backing up in your toilet or sinks. When you flush your toilet and turn on your sink and then hear a gurgling sound from the drain, this is a key indicator of a clog. The water is trying to drain through your sewer pipes but it has no place to go, so it travels back up your sewer line

Bad Smells

The water that comes back up and out of your drain pipes when there is a clog in your sewage line will likely be sewer water, so it will smell terrible. These bad smells are another sign that you have a drain clog. There may also be a strange smell coming from your drains even without the visible sign of water backing up there, so make sure to pay attention if you catch any strange odors near your drains

Slow Drainage

If you start to notice that the water is draining slower and slower down your sink or toilet, that could indicate that there’s a clog in your sewer line. It is common for drains to back up in the shower or bathroom sink due to hair or other causes so don’t be alarmed right away. But, if multiple drains in your home are draining slowly at the same time, you may have a clogged sewer pipe

Muddy Yard

Lots of standing water or mud in your yard is often an indicator of poor drainage, especially if it has not been an issue in your yard previously. Sewer lines are often buried deep underground, so you may not notice the issue with a clogged pipe at first. But, since we’re dealing with sewer water, the smell associated with it will often make itself pretty obvious even if the water is not starting to pool up yet in your yard. Make sure to take note of strange smells- they are a clear sign of a sewer pipe clog
